Deutsche Opera Berlin Announces 2014-15 Season With Rolando Villazon, Edita Gruberova, Anja Harteros, Elina Garanca and Watraud Meier Headlining

The Deutsche Oper Berlin has announced its 2014-15 season.
The season will feature nine premieres including Xenakis’ work «Orestia.» The production, which opens on Sept. 9, will feature Michael Hoffmeister and Seth Carico and will be conducted by Moritz Gnann.
Meyerbeer’s rarely performed work «Dinorah» will receive a concert performance on Oct. 1 and will include acclaimed soprano Patrizia Ciofi in the title role. The performance will feature Jana Kurucova, Philippe Talbot and Etienne Dupuis. The performance will conducted by Enrique Mazzola.
On Oct. 14 Anja Harteros will take on the title role in Richard Strauss’ «Ariadne auf Naxos.» The cast also includes Stefan Vinke as Bacchus, Daniela Sindram as the Composer and Susanne Elmark as Zerbinetta. Ulf Schrimer will conduct the masterpiece.
Legendary soprano Edita Gruberova will take on her signature role as Elisabetta the First in Donizetti’s «Roberto Devereux.» The work will be performed in two concert and will also feature Celso Albelo in the title role. Pietro Rizzo will conduct the performances.
Fiona Shaw will direct a production of Britten’s «The Rape of Lucretia,» which will open on Nov.15. The work will be performed by Katarina Bradic and will be conducted by Nicolas Carter. The opera will only receive two performances.
On Jan. 25 Shostakovich’s opera «Lady Macbeth of Mtsenk» will receive a new production by Ole Naders Tandberg. The production will star Evelyn Herlitzius and John Tomlinson. The work is scheduled to be performed five times.
Acclaimed tenor Rolando Villazon is set to direct Puccini’s late work «La Rodine.» The opera will star Dinara Alieva in the title role with Charles Castronovo Joseph Calleja sharing the role of Ruggero. Roberto Rizzi Brignoli will conduct the opera which open on March 8.
On April 18 Sasha Waltz will direct a new production of Berlioz’s «Romeo et Juliette.» The work will star Ronnita Miller, Thomas Blondelle and Tobias Kehrer. Donald Runnicles will lead the orchestra and chorus.
The final new production will be Gonoud’s «Faust.» Philipp Stozl will direct the work, which will star Teodor Llincai, Krassimira Stoyanova and Ildebrando d’Arcangelo.
The season will also include a number of revivals including Verdi’s «Don Carlo.» The revival will star Villazon in the title role, Giacomo Prestia, Adrianne Pieczonka, and Anna Smirnova.
Lativian superstar Elina Garanca will take on the role of Octavian in Strauss’s «Der Rosenkavalier» alongside Michaela Kaunne as the Marschallin.
Strauss’ «Elektra» will also be featured with Waltraud Meier as Klytamnestra and Catherine Foster in the title role.
Aleksandra Kurzak, Marina Rebka and Ciofi are set to share the role of Violetta in Verdi’s «La Traviata» alongside Arthur Rucinski and Leo Nucci.
Aside from her assignment in «Aradne,» Harteros will the role of Elsa in Wagner’s «Lohengrin.» The production will also star Klaus Florian Vogt, Roberto Sacca, Gunther Groissbock and Meier.
Harteros will also take on the role of Tosca in Puccini’s masterpiece. The opera will also star Marcelo Alavarez and Ambrogio Maestri.
Other big stars that will be featured during the season include Marina Poplavskaya in Tchiakovsky’s «Eugene Onegin»; Aleksandrs Antonenko in Puccini’s «La Fanciulla del West»; Carmen Giannattasio in Puccini’s «La Boheme»; Olga Peretyatko in Donizett’s «L’Elisir d’Amore»; Liudmyla Monastyrska in «Nabucco»; and Roberto Alagna in Bizet’s «Carmen.»
